The Abbotsford Canucks continued their five-game road trip on Friday night with the first of two stops in Ontario against the Reign. 

Linus Karlsson, who leads Abbotsford in goals and points, entered the contest with five points over his last five games, while Arsh Bains has registered nine points across his last nine contests. Earlier in the afternoon, Jack Rathbone was recalled to Vancouver, meaning Chad Nychuk made his return to the Abbotsford blue line on Friday.

Arturs Silovs, two days after his 22nd birthday, took to the crease for Abbotsford. The Latvian shot stopper came into the game with a 7-1-1 record over his last nine AHL starts. Cal Petersen, off the back of a 4-0 shutout victory in Tucson against the Roadrunners, got the start for the Reign.

It was an even, back and forth first period, with Abbotsford striking the iron twice from Aatu Räty and Matt Alfaro. However it would be the hosts who opened up the scoring in the final four minutes of the frame. Nate Schnarr snapped a shot from the blue line, and through a screen in front of Silovs, Schnarr’s first as a member of the Reign opened the scoring.

That lead would last a mere eight seconds, as Brady Keeper rung the puck around the boards of the Reign zone. Taking a deflection off of the stanchion then the top of the net, the puck fell flat in front of the crease with Petersen behind the goal trying to react to the hop. Chase Wouters won the foot race and steered home his sixth of the season, levelling the game up at 1-1.

Ontario would take the lead back less than a minute later, as Alex Turcotte slid the puck across the face of goal to Samuel Fagemo, who jammed the puck past Silovs. Fagemo’s 21st of the season would be the final scoring action of the frame, with the Reign taking the 2-1 lead into the dressing rooms after 20 minutes. The hosts also outshot Abbotsford 8-7 in the first period.

The second period would come and go without any changes to the score line, despite the best efforts of Aidan Dudas, who was denied on a breakaway by Silovs. All seven penalties of the game at that point came in the middle frame, with Abbotsford going a perfect 4/4 on the penalty kill. Ontario entered the third period leading 2-1 despite being out shot 19-17.

It wouldn’t take long for that score line to change, as Cameron Gaunce doubled the Reign’s advantage three minutes into the period. Gaunce’s first of the season came from the slot after a centering feed from Andre Lee.

Lee would later be the one to seal the game, as he buried an empty net goal with four minutes remaining to set up a 4-1 Reign lead.

That is how the game would end, and the Canucks would continue to wait for their playoff birth in the 2023 Calder Cup Playoffs. Ontario made it two wins in a row and took the contest 4-1 on home ice.

Andre Lee grabbed his first shorthanded goal of his AHL career, as well as the second multi-point game of his career. Chase Wouters grabbed his first goal since December 31st, while Abbotsford gave up it’s first short handed goal on the road since November. Arturs Silovs made 19 saves on 22 attempts, while Cal Petersen stopped 26 of the 27 Canucks’ efforts he faced.

ABBOTSFORD FALLS 4-1 TO ONTARIO IN FIRST OF TWO WEEKEND MATCHUPS

**Ontario, CA – **The Abbotsford Canucks are finishing up their last California tour of the regular season with a two-game series against the Ontario Reign on Friday and Sunday. After their 3-1 loss to the Bakersfield Condors, Abbotsford sits tied for third with the Colorado Eagles in the Pacific Division with a 35-22-2-4 record. Ontario is nine points behind sitting fifth in the Pacific Division with a record of 31-26-4-1. 

Abbotsford’s most recent matchup saw Arshdeep Bains scoring the lone goal against the Bakersfield Condors, with his fellow rookie Linus Karlsson with the assist. Karlsson leads the team in scoring (45 pts) and goals (20). He also currently holds the franchise record for most points scored by an Abbotsford rookie, previously held by Jack Rathbone. Arshdeep Bains sits fourth in scoring for the Abbotsford Canucks with 10 goals and 24 assists, good for third in the helper category.  

In between the two rookies are Justin Dowling and Tristen Nielsen. Dowling, who just saw his 500th career AHL game has 42 points, leading the team in assists (31) and Nielsen has registered 38 points (14G, 24A). 

Ontario’s most recent matchups were a split series with the Tucson Roadrunners, losing the first game 4-1, and completing a comeback the next night with a 4-0 shutout. Swedish blueliner Tobias Bjornfot score Ontario’s lone goal of the first matchup against Tucson, with leading AHL scorer T.J. Tynan getting the primary assist.  

Tynan not only leads the league in scoring, but he also leads in assists with 64 of his 72 total points being helpers.  

The next night Ontario shut Tucson out 4-0 with 10 different members of the roster registering at least one point. Tyler Madden and Aidan Dudas both tallied a goal that night, keeping near the top of Ontario’s leaderboard alongside Lias Andersson and rookie Martin Chromiak. 

The last time Abbotsford and Ontario met Abbotsford swept the two-game series at home. 

Abbotsford goalie Spencer Martin registered his first shutout of the season with their 4-0 victory, denying all 22 shots by Ontario. Rookie Marc Gatcomb nabbed his second goal of his AHL career, with seven other Canucks registering a point.  

The next night Abbotsford beat Ontario 5-2, with Matt Alfaro having a career-high multi-point night, scoring two goals and one assist. Linus Karlsson saw his 20th goal of the season and Marc Gatcomb, Aatu Raty, and Arshdeep Bains each tallied two points apiece. Ontario’s Lias Andersson scored both Reign goals, with T.J. Tynan collecting a helper on both goals. Ontario outshot Abbotsford 44 to 24, with Arturs Silovs making 42 saves.

ABBOTSFORD CANUCKS VS ONTARIO REIGN SERIES PREVIEW

The Abbotsford Canucks squared off with the Bakersfield Condors on Wednesday night, where the Canucks could clinch a playoff spot in the 2023 Calder Cup Playoffs.

An Abbotsford victory wouldn’t be enough to secure it on Wednesday, as the Canucks would need a victory from the Colorado Eagles as well against the 8th place San Jose Barracuda.

From Mechanics Bank Arena in Bakersfield, California, Arsh Bains and Aatu Räty both entered the game averaging a point-per-game over their last eight and seven games respectively. Spencer Martin took over from Arturs Silovs after Saturday’s victory against Ontario, with Martin having gone 4-1-1 over his last six starts, including one shutout.

In the Condors net, Olivier Rodrigue made just his second appearance of the season against Abbotsford, having not faced the Canucks since November 30th, where Abbotsford defeated the Condors 4-3.

The Condors were not messing around early on, as they searched for their first win of the season series (0-2-1-0). It would take 15 seconds until the contest had it’s first goal. Former Canuck, Justin Bailey, snapped home his 16th of the season from the top of the circles. 

After the first 15 seconds, the Condors would then go 16:50 without recording another shot on goal against Spencer Martin.

As early into the game that Bakersfield scored Abbotsford would then find an equalizer with even less time remaining in the period.

Linus Karlsson brought the puck forward with Arsh Bains into the Condors’ zone, when Karlsson backhanded the puck towards goal with Bains in front. The puck would take a high, looping deflection off of a Condors stick, when Bains jumped up and batted the puck down with his hand out of the air.

He dropped the puck to his feet and jammed the puck past Rodrigue for his 10th of the season with just 11 seconds remaining in the frame.

After the opening 20 minutes, the two teams were tied at 1-1, with the Canucks leading the shot count 7-4.

Bakersfield would jump back out in front early in the second, when Seth Griffith carried the puck through the neutral zone, before springing Raphael Lavoie and James Hamblin in front. A quick nudge over to Hamblin before a snapshot past Martin gave Bakersfield the 2-1 lead four minutes into the second.

Abbotsford would kill a late Chase Wouters double minor call for high sticking, only surrendering one shot through four minutes. However the period would come to an end with the Condors leading 2-1, while Abbotsford lead the shot count 16-15.
The Canucks would keep pushing for the goal that, with the help of a Colorado Eagles victory against San Jose, would punch Abbotsford’s ticket to the playoffs.

The third period saw the continuation of an evenly fought battle. Phil Kemp did his part to keep the Condors in front in the dying minutes, clearing the puck off of the line on a Canucks’ powerplay with three minutes left.

That scramble around Rodrigue would be as close as it would come for the Canucks to booking their place in the post season on Wednesday, as Justin Bailey finished off the game with an empty net goal in the final minute to secure a 3-1 win for the Condors.

Arsh Bains picked up his ninth point in his last nine games, while Justin Bailey notched his third multi-goal game of the season. Martin stopped 19 of the 21 shots he saw, with the 22nd being the empty net tally, while Rodrigue made 29 saves on 30 Abbotsford efforts.

The Abbotsford Canucks fell 3-1 to the Bakersfield Condors at Mechanics Bank Arena on Wednesday night.

BAINS SCORES LONE ABBOTSFORD GOAL AS CANUCKS FALL 3-1 IN BAKERSFIELD

Abbotsford Canucks General Manager, Ryan Johnson, announced today that the club has signed defenceman Andy Carroll to an amateur try out agreement.

Carroll, 26, joins Abbotsford after completing his fifth NCAA Division I season with Minnesota State University-Mankato (CCHA), where he ranked third on his team in assists (20), second among defencemen in goals (five) and third among defencemen in points (25); all of which were collegiate career highs.

A native of Northfield, Minnesota, Carroll departs Minnesota State’s program ranking third all-time in games played for the school, having skated in 170 NCAA games with the Mavericks. Over five campaigns he recorded 64 points (14 goals, 50 assists) while registering 45 penalty minutes and a +70 plus-minus rating.

The 6-0, 185 lb. defenceman was a part of three WCHA regular season championships in 2019, 2020 and 2021, while capturing two conference championships (WCHA in 2019 and CCHA in 2022) over his five seasons with Minnesota State-Mankato.

Canucks Sign Carroll To ATO

**Abbotsford, B.C. –** The Abbotsford Canucks have clinched a spot in the 2023 Calder Cup Playoffs for the second year in a row following the Bakersfield Condors' 4-1 win over the San Jose Barracuda on Sunday. The Canucks are the seventh team in the league (fourth team in the Pacific Division) to clinch a playoff berth this season behind the Calgary Wranglers, Coachella Valley Firebirds, Toronto Marlies, Providence Bruins, Hershey Bears, and Colorado Eagles.

Abbotsford is currently sitting in third place in the Pacific Division with a 35-23-3-4 record and 77 points, tied with the Colorado Eagles and six points on the fifth place Ontario Reign. 

The Canucks have seven regular season games remaining, including five home games.  

The teams placing second, third, and fourth in the Pacific Division all receive home ice advantage in the opening round of the Calder Cup Playoffs. If the Abbotsford Canucks secure home ice advantage, the entire best-of-three first round series of the Calder Cup Playoffs is expected to take place on April 19, 21, and 23, at the Abbotsford Centre all at 7:00pm.

ABBOTSFORD CANUCKS CLINCH CALDER CUP PLAYOFF SPOT

For the second time this weekend, the Abbotsford Canucks squared off with the Ontario Reign on Sunday afternoon from Toyota Arena in California.

Brady Keeper skated in his 100th career AHL game, while Yushiroh Hirano returned to the lineup. Spencer Martin returned to the Abbotsford goal, attempting to become the second goaltender in Abbotsford Canucks history to record 25 wins for the franchise. It would be Matthew Villalta in goal for the Reign, making his 20th start of the season and his first in two weeks.

Abbotsford were the quicker of the two sides out of the gate, opening up the game with a 9-2 shot count over the Reign in the first 10 minutes. Villalta stood tall to the bulk of the chances, however Marc Gatcomb would open the scoring for the visitors.

Aatu Räty muscled the puck away from a Reign defender along the boards before slinging the puck towards goal. Gatcomb took a few jabs at the puck before it trickled past the Ontario netminder and into the back of the net for his third goal of the season. 

Lias Andersson would level the game at one before the intermission, as he converted on an Ontario powerplay for his 26th of the year. The clock would wind down and the two sides would head back to the dressing rooms knotted at 1-1. Through 20 minutes, Abbotsford lead the shot count 13-5.

The Canucks would jump back out to the lead with a goal by Arsh Bains eight minutes into the middle frame. Chad Nychuk brought the puck into the Reign zone and fired a shot towards Villalta. The rebound fell straight to Bains who batted the puck out of the air and into the net to give Abbotsford the 2-1 lead.

Bains’ 11th of the season would be the difference maker through 40 minutes, with the Canucks leading 2-1, as well as leading the shot totals 20-15.

Ontario wouldn’t go down without a fight, and Samuel Fagemo pulled the Reign level nine minutes into the third. Capitalizing on another man advantage, Fagemo’s 22nd of the year set up a 2-2 score line.

That would be the score after 60 minutes, with Overtime being required to decide a winner. Tyler Madden would secure the full two points for Ontario, as the Reign took the contest 3-2.

Despite the loss, Abbotsford picked up the point that was required to clinch a playoff spot, as well as Bakersfield defeating San Jose 4-1 earlier in the afternoon. 

Arsh Bains grabbed his third goal in four games, while Tyler Madded picked up his second career game winning goal. Spencer Martin turned aside 23 of the 26 shots he saw, while Villalta stopped 29 of Abbotsford’s 31 efforts.
